(Grand Rapids, MI) - The Concordia men and women's cross country teams finished their 2013 campaign by competing at the WHAC Championships in Grand Rapids, MI. Out of ten WHAC schools the women's team finished seventh while the men placed ninth.  This was the best placing both Cardinal squads have finished in over five seasons.

Head Coach Jamie LaBrosse stated that "getting out of the basement is the first rung in our ladder of success.  I was proud of the way the young teams competed on a cold, windy and damp afternoon.   Although the teams were a little banged up they competed well under the pressure of a big time meet."

Crossing the finish line first for the Lady Cardinals was freshman Brie Schofield, placing 37th overall.  She ran 20:20.83 placing her 6th all-time in the Concordia record books.  Next to finish were fellow freshmen Melaina Bent and Kelsey Riley running times of 21:41.71 and 21:55.78. Junior Delisia Morris was the fourth scorer for the Lady Cards with a time of 22:06.00.  The final scorer for CUAA was freshman Molly Jarvis.  Jarvis ran a minute and ½ better than her previous personal record in the biggest meet of her young career finishing with a time of 22:44.08.   She was closely followed by freshmen Sidney Bosley and junior Leigh McRobbie.  Rounding out the team runners were Alexis Tino and Michaela Horgan.

One the men's side junior Alex Kitchin once again performed well, finishing first for the Cardinals and 45th overall with a time of 28:33.82.  Two young Cardinals finished right behind Kitchin, freshman Miguel Gonzalez-Feliciano and Andrew Gardner ran times of 29:11.17 and 29.11.35 respectively.   Fellow freshman, Charlie Jones was the fourth Cardinal runner to cross the line completing the course in 31:35.75 while fighting an injury. Coach LaBrosse stated that "Charlie hadn't run much leading into the meet but stepped up and ran well."

Chris Sprinkle was the fifth scorer for Concordia running a time of 33:13.61.   Sophomore Timothy Grimm and freshman Zack Zoltowski were the final runners finishing for the men's team.

At the end of the meet two players from each team were chosen as representatives for the Champions of Character Award for the WHAC.  This year the honors went to Alex Kitchin and Leigh McRobbie.  Both Kitchin and McRobbie, along with fellow juniors Molly Rathje and Ryan Bjellquist-Ledger were all named to the WHAC All-Academic Team.

At the end of the day Coach LaBrosse was pleased with his team's performance saying, "They (the teams) seem sold on the program and everyone ran solid. I feel that with such young teams the future is bright.  I am excited and looking forward to everyone improving through the Track and Field seasons and into next year."
