[Women's Cross Country] Cornerstone finishes 2nd at Lansing InvitationalPublished by
(Lansing, Mich.) The Cornerstone University Women's Cross Country team earned their second runner-up finish of the season at the Lansing Community College Invitational. The course at Grand Woods Park features five kilometers of grass and wooded trails and usually produces quick times. Temperatures in the mid-70s and the humidity at 84% meant personal best times were unlikely. In addition, the course which works well for ten teams, proved too narrow for the more than 30 teams than entered the meet. "The first 1200 meters were very crowded and there were women walking around the first few corners," said CU Coach Rod Wortley. "We were buried in the first mile, but worked our way forward very well." Julie Oosterhouse got clear of the traffic in the first 400 meters, putting herself in the top ten at the mile mark. From there she worked her way up to fourth, finishing in 18:26. Cathy Coryell and Audrey Tremaine raced well together. Coryell pulled ahead in the final mile, taking 14th in 19:10 with Tremaine seven seconds back in 21st. Trinity Hulst recorded a season best 19:40 in 32nd place and Kaylee Carew (42nd / 20:02), Sydney Tremaine (46th / 20:07) and Leah Shepherd (48th / 20:08) rounded out CU's top seven. "Our five through seven pack was just six seconds apart, which was what we wanted," said Wortley. "We came in ranked 16th in this week's NAIA poll and IndianaTech is 23rd, so we needed to stay ahead of them." Saginaw Valley State put five in the top eleven to win the meet with 27 points. Cornerstone's 92 points were seven better than conference rivals, Indiana Tech. The Golden Eagles travel to Lawrence Kansas next week for the NAIA Nationals Preview meet.
