[Cross Country] Cross Country Invitational - Saturday, Sept. 7Published by
The time has finally arrived for the Friends University Cross Country teams to compete in the 2013 season. Traditionally the programs host an invitational to start the year and this season is no different. Friends University Cross Country has teamed up with GoRun Wichita for the Friends University / Wild Wind Invitational. GoRun Wichita is a robust organization which serves the Wichita and surrounding communities in various ways. The Cross Country Invitational will be held this year on Saturday, September 7 at the Cessna Activities Center (2744 George Washington Blvd.) in Wichita, KS. Programs competing in the event are Barclay College, Hutchinson Community College, Hesston Community College, Manhattan Christian College, Newman University, Oklahoma Wesleyan University, and KCAC schools Southwestern College, Sterling College as well as the University of St. Mary. The Friends University Women's Cross Country team enters this season as the defending KCAC champions. Several returners along with some new additions will help the ladies to prepare for the push to another title. The Falcon Men's Cross Country team finished in a tie for second place in the KCAC in 2012 and will also display a blend of solid returners and newcomers with hopes of overcoming Southwestern College, the defending champions at the end of the season. Coach Damian Smithhisler, in his second year at the helm had this to say about the men and women programs. "We're excited to finally compete against somebody other than ourselves and get a starting point for our season. Our runners have put in a lot of work in tough conditions this summer and in the first three weeks of official practice. I believe we have two strong squads with a few individuals who are going to be at the top of the conference. Our new additions are going to make an impact and contribute in their first year. We have a few minor injuries that will hold a few runners out of this first meet, but our goal is to be at full strength and at our best at the end of the season rather than now. The Friends University / Wild Wind Invitational will be a great indication of where we are and where we need to get to, as competition will be tough, including some of the top teams in our conference as well as other strong programs like Newman University. We look forward to having great home support and thank GoRun of Wichita for their continued partnership in hosting this event." The men's race will begin at 7:30 a.m. followed by the women's race at approximately 8:20 a.m. Over 150 student athletes will be competing at the invitational.
