For some teams, this weekend was the conclusion of a long winter season with hopes of stretching their legs outdoors. For some teams, this was a weekend where meets meant positioning to see if they ha individuals qualifying for Illinois Top Times.

There were so many great performances throughout the state this past weekend. It gave us an idea of the athletes that will be stepping into the spotlight over the next few months.

Here is look at some of the highlights of some of the invitational and conference meets that took place throughout Illinois over the past weekend.

Charleston EIU Boys Invitational

Large SchoolsRyan Ashenbremer (Normal Community West HS) had the performance of the meet in the Pole Vault. The sophomore entered March with a personal best of 14-9. Last week at the New Balance Indoor Nationals, he cleared 15-4 ¼ to earn a personal best. He increased his personal best by more than a foot clearing an incredible 16-5 (IL #1, US #10) to win the event. Joe Bevilacqua (Bloomington Central Catholic) also had a PR day clearing 15-0 to finish second.

Cahokia once again showed their dominance winning all three relay events. Their 3200 relay ran a season’s best 8:05.88 (IL #9) to win the race by 16 seconds ahead of Plainfield North. The Comanches also had a season’s best 1:31.04 to dominate the 800 Meter Relay winning by more than two seconds ahead of Plainfield North and East St. Louis-Senior. Cahokia had area rival East St. Louis-Senior close to them the entire race in the 1600 Relay. Cahokia came away with the meet win (3:24.19) by two seconds (3:26.25) ahead of the Flyers.

William Session (East HS, Belleville) bounced back from his third place finish at last week’s Edwardsville Invitational by running a then state’s best 8.04 in his preliminary heat of the 60 Hurdles. He was nipped at the line in the finals finishing second to Korrion Session (Cahokia HS). Both athletes were timed at 8.10. Kevion Akins (Cahokia HS) continues to improve in the sprints. He ran a personal best (7.01) to win the 60 Meter Dash by four hundredths of a second ahead of Devaughn Hrobowski (North HS, Plainfield).

Wes Schoenthal (Edwardsville HS) had an easy time winning the 800 Meter Run (1:57.80) by three seconds ahead of Kenny Peters (South HS, Plainfield) and Chris Stanley (Cahokia HS). Heath Warren (Springfield HS) came out on top winning a close 1600 Meter Run (4:24.68) with John Partee (South HS, Plainfield), Brydon Groves-Scott (Edwardsville HS), and Brenner Webster (Salem HS) all within two seconds of each other.

It was a low keyed meet for Ja’Mari Ward (Cahokia HS) this weekend after two huge wins at the New Balance Indoor Nationals. He helped his team in both the 800 and 1600 Meter Relays. He also won the Long Jump (23-3 ¾). Barry Richardson (Mascoutah HS) jumped a season’s best 22-11 ½ to finish second.

Small Schools – Tolono Unity ran the fastest 1A time in the 3200 Meter Relay crossing the line in 8:22.05 to finish four seconds ahead of Shelbyville. Andre McGill (Madison HS) was a double winner in the sprints Saturday morning. He started the day winning the 60 Meter Dash (7.03) by six hundredth of a second ahead of Connor Icenogle (Williamsville HS). McGill came back to win the 200 Meter Dash (23.30) a tenth of a second ahead of Justin Goff (Wesclin HS, Trenton).

Stephen Gibson (Tuscola HS) won the Shot Put (53-1) by more than two feet ahead of Nick Barr (Sidell-Jamaica COOP). Corey Kersey (Neoga HS) started off his season on a winning note capturing the Triple Jump with a 44-11 effort. Riley Smith (Casey Westfield HS) tuned up for the Illinois Top Times Championships clearing 15-0 to win the Pole Vault.

Chicago Catholic League Championships

There was no let down for Eric Walker (St. Rita HS, Chicago) when he stepped into the blocks for the 60 Meter Hurdles at this meet Saturday afternoon. His 8.22 time in the prelims were evidence of that. His finals were even better running a state tying 8.04 to win the event by almost half a second ahead of Tahj Silas (Brother Rice HS, Chicago). Marcus Jones (Brother Rice HS, Chicago) only had the fourth fastest time after the prelims of the 60 Meter Dash. It was a different story in the finals as Jones came away with the win (6.95, IL #4) by seven hundredths of a second ahead of Tyrin Thurman (Mt Carmel HS, Chicago).

Andy Jatis and Lucas Weaver (Providence Catholic HS, New Lenox) took the top two spots in the Pole Vault. Jatis got himself ready for a Top Times showdown with up and coming Ryan Ashenbremer by clearing 16-0. Weaver’s clearance of 14-6 was a personal best. Sal Flight (Fenwick HS, Oak Park) looks like he is fully recovered from an injury that sidelined him during last fall’s cross country season. Flight took the win in the 1600 Meter Run (4:20.26, IL #8) more than five seconds ahead of second place Dan Santino (St. Ignatius College Prep, Chicago).

Galesburg Silver Streak Invitational

Josh Eiker (Galesburg HS) stole the show like he has for the past year in this meet. Eiker started off his day winning the 60 Meter Dash (6.99) ahead of Dunlap’s Roman Hampton (7.22). He then anchored Galesburg’s winning 800 Meter Relay (1:31.61, IL #6) four seconds ahead of Quincy. Eiker saved his best for last in the 200 Meter Dash. H ran the fastest indoor time in the state this season (21.81) to win by more than a second with teammate Ben Holloway placing second. Holloway also won the Long Jump (21-10). Michael Cook (Wethersfield HS, Annawan) was the only other double winner in the Boys Meet. Cook, who missed cross country season due to a stress fracture, won the 800 Meter Run (2:04.64). Aaron Fordyce (Dunlap HS) was more than a second behind in second place. It was a little tighter in the 1600 Meter Run but Cook prevailed winning by fifteen hundredths of a second (4:35.15) just ahead of Kyle Riege (United Township HS, East Moline). Matt Carr (Limestone HS, Bartonville) was another quarter of a second back in third place.

Freshman Aanise Sajna (Dunlap HS) was the big story in the Girls Meet winning three events. She won the 60 Meter Dash (8.11) just eleven hundredths ahead of Cindy Ladner (Galesburg HS). Sajna’s other win on the track was in the 200 Meter Dash when she ran 27.20 to win ahead of Rachel Hilton (East Peoria HS). Her third win was in the Long Jump. She won (17-0) by only two inches ahead of Hailey Cook (Moline HS).

Gene Armer Invitational

Boys MeetJohnathan Stokes (North Lawndale Prep, Chicago) stepped into the Illinois sprint spotlight in this meet. The senior’s best performance prior to this meet was his third place finish in the 55 Meter Dash at the Proviso West Invitational. It was a little different Saturday at the U of I Armory. He won the 60 Meter Dash with the state’s fastest time in the event (6.93). The finish was tight with him finishing just one hundredth of a second ahead of Adam Nelson (Triad HS, Troy). It was the second time that Nelson had finished second in a race in as many weeks by that same margin. Last week, it was to Deshon Buchanan (Belleville West HS) at the Edwardsville Invitational. Top 1A sprinter Brett Charlton (Eureka HS) placed third (7.04). There was a little more of a gap between the two in the 200 Meter Dash. It was again Stokes on top (22.98) finishing ahead of Nelson by three hundredths of a second.

Sam Sikon (Carbondale HS) had the big field event performance in this meet. It was an easy win for the sophomore as he finished more than eleven feet ahead of Nick Olson (Flanagan-Cornell HS). Sikon’s winning put was a state leading 60-0. It achieved a new personal best by more than three feet better than his previous best mark (56-11 ¼).

Elijah Douglas (Crete-Monee HS) won two individual events and was part of a third. Douglas won the Long Jump (22-8 ¾) by a foot ahead of George Washington (Rantoul HS). He currently has the 4th best jump in the state (22-10). He headed to the track where he won the 60 Meter hurdles (8.16, IL #5) with Josh Kirby (Peoria Christian HS) placing second (8.34). Douglas played a part in Crete-Monee winning the 800 Meter Relay (1:33.08) almost two seconds ahead of Troy Triad.

Connor Stine (Olympia HS, Stanford) improved his indoor personal best by almost four seconds when he won the 800 Meter Run (1:58.83, IL #12). Pavlo Hutsalyuk (Lane Tech HS, Chicago) was in complete control winning the 1600 Meter Run (4:19.11, IL #4) winning by eight seconds ahead of Peter Johnsrud (Oswego HS).

Girls MeetDominique Lewis (Centennial HS, Champaign) remained undefeated this season in the 60 Meter Dash but it was a close finish. She won the at this meet (7.68) by only a tenth of a second ahead of Tyjuana Eason (Kankakee HS) and Emone Davis (Danville HS). Lewis also won the 200 Meter Dash (25.59) sixteen hundredths of a second ahead of freshman Tina Martin (Eisenhower HS, Decatur). Kierra Griggs (Bloom Township HS, Chicago Heights) ran the second fastest time in the 400 Meter Dash (58.10) this season winning the race ahead of second place Jasmine Smyles (Prosser Academy, Chicago).

Anna Sophia Keller (St. Anthony HS, Effingham) had little trouble in winning the 3200 Meter Run. Her time of 10:55.83 (IL #5) was 20 second faster than that by Maria Brauer (PORTA HS, Petersburg) and Caitlyn Allen (Marengo HS). Tineja Foy (Crete-Monee HS) ran the fifth fastest time in the state (9.15) in the 60 Hurdles winning by more than three tenths ahead of Chante Stonewall (University HS, Normal). Brooke Catherine (Normal Community HS) went over 13 feet for the fourth time this season in winning the Pole Vault clearing 13-2.

The Girls relay races were close. Lane Tech won the 3200 Meter Relay (9:59.24) almost four seconds ahead of Normal University. Springfield Southeast (1:47.16) was on top in the 800 Meter Relay ahead of Danville (1:47.59) and Kankakee (1:48.50). Bloom Township won the 1600 Meter Relay (4:01.90) less than a second ahead of Lane Tech (4:02.52).

Mid Suburban League Championships

Boys Meet – There were so many great performances in this meet. It was the sprints that might have been the best. Two of the state’s top sprinters needed a photo to determine the finish in both the 55 Meter Dash and the 200 Meter Dash. Shandall Thomas (Schaumburg HS) came out on top ahead of Scotty Miller (Barrington HS). Thomas finished one hundredth of a second ahead of Miller in the 55 Meter Dash (6.35-6.36) with the state’s two fastest times in the event. Thomas came back to run 22.37 (IL #5) again ahead of Miller’s 22.46 (IL #7).

The distance races were terrific in this meet. Prospect started it off winning the 3200 Meter Relay (8:02.62, IL #8) six seconds ahead of Hersey. Kevin Salvano (Buffalo Grove HS) and Graham Brown (Palatine HS) went by the first mile of the 3200 Meter Run in a sizzling 4:33. It took a final surge in the last 200 meters for Salvano to break away from Brown. Salvano ran 9:10.05 (IL #2) to finish four second ahead of second place Brown (9:14.88, IL #4). Konrad Eiring (Barrington HS) lowered his season’s best in the 800 down to 1:56.76 (IL #2) to win by more than two seconds ahead of Bryan Gamboa (Hoffman Estates HS).

Zach Dale (Conant HS, Hoffman Estates) was on his own after the first 100 meters making the 1600 Meter Run more of a time trial for him. He rebounded from a great 2 Mile in New York with a great 1600 in Naperville running the state’s best time in the event (4:14.11). He won by 17 seconds ahead of Matt Petersen (Hoffman Estates HS).

Jake LaRocca (Palatine HS) continues to up his school’s indoor record in the Pole Vault. He cleared 15-0 to win the event Saturday.

Girls Meet – It was Barrington that controlled the sprints in this meet. Nina Hodges was a double winner winning the 55 Meter Dash (7.46) by a hundredth of a second ahead of Nya Carr (Buffalo Grove HS). Hodges came back to win the 200 Meter Dash (26.23). She was also a part of her team’s winning 800 Meter Relay (1:45.19, IL #4) more than two seconds ahead of Palatine (1:47.79). Addison Coy won the 400 Meter Dash (59.02, IL #9) by more than two seconds. She was also a part of her school’s winning 1600 Meter Relay (3:58.80, IL #2) that finished ahead of Fremd by more than six seconds.

Palatine has a stranglehold on the individual distance events. Kelly O’Brien took home a pair of championships in the 800 Meter Run and the 1600 Meter Run. O’Brien won the 800 (2:17.42, IL #6) by more than three seconds ahead of Hailey Dammeier (Wheeling HS). O’Brien waited until the last 400 of the 1600 Meter Run to pull away from Ayaiko Higuchi (Fremd HS, Palatine) for a five second win (5:05.91, IL #9). Higuchi was part of Fremd’s winning 3200 Meter Relay (9:26.77) that won by sixteen seconds ahead of Hoffman Estates.

Gabby Heidrich was a double winner winning the Long Jump (17-3) and the Triple Jump (34-7). Jess Skudlarek (5-5) and Cassidy Selep (Prospect HS, Mt. Prospect) finished 1-2 in the High Jump. Their teammate Maya Mason won the 55 Hurdles (8.49, IL #5).

Upstate Eight Girls Conference Meet

The best race of the meet was the 1600 Meter Run. After going out in 2:32 for the first 800, Gabby Juarez (Streamwood HS) and Torree Scull (St. Charles East HS) broke away from the pack. Juarez ran the second fastest time in the state (4:58.66) finishing ahead of Scull (4:58.92, IL #3). Samara Miller (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville) lowered her personal indoor best winning the 400 Meter Dash (58.60, IL #5) ahead of teammate Tashee Hargrave.

Upstate Eight Boys Conference Meet

Neuqua Valley captured the team championship in their final year in the conference before they move to the DuPage Valley Conference. Ty Moss (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville) had the best performance of the meet. There was supposed to be a challenging race in the 800 with Moss and the fastest runner in the state this indoor season Connor McCue (West Aurora HS) facing off. McCue could not compete due to an illness that kept him home most of the week. Moss ran an even paced 58/58 in winning the race (1:56.78) by almost six seconds ahead of JB Sandlund (East HS, St. Charles).

Moss was back on the track 30 minutes later in the 400 Meter Dash in what was the best race of the night. Peyton Piron (Batavia HS) had the lead as the runners broke off of the far curve. Moss and teammate Zac Espinosa were right on Piron’s shoulder. The pace picked up on the back stretch with Piron refusing to give up the lead. On the final curve, Piron moved to the outside of the first lane giving Moss the opportunity to pass. Moss crossed the line barely ahead of Espinosa winning by only two hundredths of a second (49.96 – 49.98). Piron was close behind in third place (50.14). The top three places were also the fastest three times in the state so far this season.

Moss also contributed to the Wildcats win in the 1600 Meter Relay. The team was behind in the early stages but a strong third leg giving Moss the lead as he took the baton. Neuqua went on to win the event (3:28.19) by seven seconds ahead of St. Charles East.

Chris Walker (West Aurora HS) started off his season with strong performances in the horizontal jumps. His first round jump in the Triple Jump (47-1 ¼) which was the second best effort in the event in the state. He won the event by three feet ahead of Kimani Mobley (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville). Walker came back to win the Long Jump (22-8 ½, IL #6) by almost a foot ahead of Justin Taormina (Geneva HS).

It took a photo to decide the outcome of the 55 Meter Dash. Bryce Petty (Bartlett HS) won the event (6.63) by one hundredth of a second ahead of Justin Taormina. Petty came back to help Bartlett win the 800 Meter Relay (1:32.89) ahead of Metea Valley.

Waubonsie Valley swept the first two places in the 55 Meter Hurdles. Tyler Kirkwood, coming back from injury, ran a season’s best 7.78 to finish 12 hundredths ahead of teammate Jeff Penny. Connor Horn (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville), also coming back from injury, broke away from David Morrison (Batavia HS) with 1200 meters to go. He won the race (4:27.85) by more than a second ahead of Michael Widmann (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville).

West Suburban Silver Boys Conference Meet

It came down to the 1600 Meter Relay to decide the conference team title between York and Oak Park-River Forest HS. The Huskies came out on top running a season’s best 3:29.86 (IL #9) to win by twelve hundredths of a second ahead of Lyons Township. Oak Park also won the 800 Meter Relay (1:34.37) finishing ahead of Glenbard West.

The most exciting individual race of the day was the 3200 Meter Run. York’s Matt Plowman sprinted past Irwin Loud (Oak Park-River Forest HS) on the back straight of the final lap of the race. Charlie Kern (York HS, Elmhurst) went right with Plowman. As the three came around the final curve, Kern was slowed down by a lapped runner. Plowman went by but also with Loud close in pursuit. Plowman and Loud crossed the line with identical times (9:28.45) with the York senior declared the winner. Kern finished third (9:28.88). Plowman came back a little while later using the same strategy of waiting and kicking in the 800 Meter Run (1:59.14) to win by more than a second ahead of Jack Diamond (North HS, Downers Grove). Plowman’s pursuit for three wins hit a roadblock in the 1600 Meter Run. Connor Madell (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange) ran a personal best 4:19.98 (IL #6) to win and finish just ahead of Downers North’s Ryan Clevenger (4:20.70, IL #9). Grace McCabe (Central HS, Hinsdale) won a tactical 1600 Meter Run (5:17.36) winning by four seconds ahead of Kathryn Kenwood (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn).

Emma Haugen (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange) was a double winner in the Triple Jump (36-6 ¼) and the High Jump (5-8). Her clearance of 5-8 currently ties her for the state lead in the event. The closest relay finish of the night was in the 3200 Meter Relay when Glenbard West held off host York for a win by four hundredth of a second (9:36.27-9:36.31).

Lake Michigan Invitational @ Carthage College

Boys MeetJesse Reiser (McHenry HS) used the 1600 Meter Run at St. Charles last week to knock the rust off of his legs since he had not raced since December. He ran the state’s fastest 3200 Meter Run time (9:02.48) in winning the event. Bryce Richards (Mundelein HS), who was second in the 800 in 2015, showed he is back finishing second running a personal best 9:19.55 to finish second.
