Kruger throws world weight throw lead; Stomps extends D2 leadPublished by
The University of Findlay hosted its fourth annual Elite Weight Meet during the Findlay Open on Friday. Nike athlete A.G. Kruger, who entered the competition with a world leading season's best of 23.80m, won the meet and extended his world lead to 24.15m. He is the defending U.S. national champion and hopes to earn his sixth U.S. indoor title later this month. The runner up was Mizuno athlete Libor Charfreitag of Slovakia. Kruger's win marks only the second time in twelve meetings that Kruger has bested Charfreitag. It is also Kruger's first win over Charfreitag in the weight throw. Charfreitag's personal best of 25.68m from 2005 is second best all-time in the world, just seven inches behind Lance Deal's world record. Not to be outdone by the professional athletes, Jason Stomps of Hillsdale College extended his Division II national lead in the weight throw. Stomps saw his lead shrink to just 1cm as returning Division II champion Drew Frizzell (Central Missouri) improved his season's best to 20.59m last weekend. Stomps not only extended the national lead, but did so in impressive fashion by upping his personal best from 20.60m to 21.39m and eclipsing 70-feet for the first time ever.
