Phelps family brings a houseful of throwers to Drake Relays

Scott and Laura Phelps of Kingsley brought a new event to the Drake Relays Thursday.

It involved running back and forth to watch their children, Nick and Kiana, simultaneously compete in throwing events at Drake Stadium.

Nick Phelps threw the discus and his sister Kiana tossed the shot. The discus started at 3 p.m. and the shot put at 3:30 p.m.

The parents juggled watching both events.

"They checked in on one and then the other," Nick said.

This may be Iowa’s first family of throwing events. Scott is a former Drake high school champion in the discus. Kiana, a senior who will seek her fourth Drake discus title Friday, placed second in the shot. Nick, a sophomore, placed third in discus; he'll compete in the shot put Friday.
