Ka'Deem Wynn - This year’s Flo Golden South Classic marked 40 years since the inaugural meet and what a joy it’s been to witness spectacles and talents year after year.

In perhaps one of, if not the the most anticipated races for both athletes and spectators alike, the 4x400 final was the greatest ever witnessed at the meet. In an absolutely tension filled race of four times around, Miami Gardens Xpress Track Club and E.O.T.O. Elite Track Club engaged in one of the biggest battles of the year, resulting in both teams running a state and US no. 1 and no. 2 times of 3:09.19 and 3:09.31.

The new time was five seconds faster than the previous time of 3:14.22 run by Miami Northwestern in the heat prior. Anchored by none other than Tyrese Cooper himself, the MGX boys took down the previous meet record, which was set by them last year (3:13.68), but really had to fight for it as the boys of E.O.T.O., anchored by Brandon Cachon, who battled with Cooper earlier in the 400 running 46.99, went for it, but grabbed second while also getting under the previous record.

Cachon and his teammates of E.O.T.O had no idea that in a little over three short minutes, they would catapult themselves to one of the nation's fastest 4x400 relay races of the year. They, along with MGX, were the only high school level teams to go under 3:10. Huntington ran 3:10.91 a few weeks later at New Balance Nationals. It’s still blazing fast, but it’s not 3:09 fast.

Coaches and athletes alike knew they were in great shape, but maybe not sub-3:10 shape.

What will happen this year the Golden South? Will the meet record be broken for a third year straight? It’s possible, especially considering that Tyrese Cooper will be around for some time.
