Sade Olatoye, a four-time Nigerian national champion, six-time African Games medalist and three-time World Athletics Championships competitor who was also a nine-time All-American at The Ohio State University and the 2019 NCAA Division 1 women's indoor weight throw champion, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing Aug. 4 in women's hammer throw qualifying at the Paris Olympics. Olatoye, 27, transferred her national eligibility in 2019 from the United States to Nigeria, after previously representing the Americans at the World Under-20 Championships in 2016 in Bydgoszcz, Poland, on a U.S. team that also included fellow Olympians Noah Lyles, Michael Norman and Anna Cockrell. She revisits the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and how 10 of the 23 potential Nigerian athletes who qualified to compete for the nation were unable to participate as a result of clerical errors and lack of communication on behalf of the country's Athletics Federation, and how Olatoye has noticed a significant improvement in the interaction since then, especially as it relates to preparing for global championships. Olatoye speaks about her relationship with former Ohio State throws coach Ashley Kovacs and American shot put star Joe Kovacs, and how they inspired her to move to Tennessee to train as a professional athlete with the group at Vanderbilt University, in addition to examining the transition with John Newell taking over as throws coach during the past year following Ashley giving birth to twins and only focusing on helping Joe prepare for the Paris Olympics. She expresses gratitude to coach Newell, along with family, friends and fellow training partners for their support during her Olympic pursuit. Olatoye shares her pride in remaining a well-rounded thrower throughout her career, especially in the weight throw, as the No. 7 all-time global competitor at 83-0.75 (25.32m), in addition to analyzing her lifetime-best 235-10 (71.88m) in the hammer throw June 1 at the Iron Wood Classic in Idaho. She discusses the recent shift in the women's hammer throw with athletes from the United States and Canada combining to capture all six combined medals at the past two World Athletics Championships, after neither country earned a medal in the Tokyo Olympics final. Olatoye also shares her excitement for the depth Nigeria boasts in the throwing events in Paris, with athletes qualified in the men's shot put and men's javelin throw, in addition to a pair of competitors in the women's discus, in addition to herself in the hammer throw. She also looks forward to watching the U.S. men's basketball team compete at the Olympics, and shares about the 106-page thesis project she researched and completed with distinction at Ohio State examining hyperandrogenism in female track and field athletes, and reveals her interactions with South African star Caster Semenya and Olatoye's goal to publish the paper next year.
