Melissa Kurzdorfer (Lancaster, NY) opened up her hammer throw season in style with a huge toss of 192'08" to win the Hartford Invitational on Saturday. Her throw broke Kristin Callan's New York state record and moved her to number six all-time in the nation.  Kurzdorfer also won the shot put and the discus at the meet and will be throwing at Kent State University next year.

In the boy's competition, A.J. Guerra (Woodstock Academy, CT), Max Milder (Bishop Hendricken, Warwick, RI) and James Hall (Beacon, NY) all improved their bests.  Guerra and Milder also broke 200-feet for the first time.  Guerra, who is headed to Southern Connecticut State University next year, also broke the Connecticut state record.  His winning throw of 211'02" added several feet to the 30-year old state record set by Bob Swanke in 1980.

Note: there is some confusion over the previous Connecticut state record. we listed Swanke's mark of 208'08", but others have Robert Guide's mark of 204'08" from last year's Hartford Public Invitational. Either way, Guerra's mark is the new state record.
