More than 10, 000 local runners along with a million other people from more than 30 countries around the globe participated in the world’s largest 1-day running event, the Nike+ Human Race 10K on October 24.

It’s only the second year that Nike has held this event and Singapore was once again the only country in Southeast Asia to be a part of this historic race. It’s no surprise actually, considering that Singapore was the first to fill its registration slots in a record 6 days.

This year’s run offered a unique race experience as the participants took off onto the track where, only recently, the top Formula 1 drivers were racing, with the tire marks still visible.

Early this morning at midnight, over 7,000 runners could be seen racing through the streets of Los Angeles as part of the 2nd annual Nike+ Human Race. Bringing over 140,000 participants worldwide in over 27 cities, the goal of the event was to celebrate runners and unite them globally in the earth’s largest one-day running event. In Los Angeles this meant starting and finishing at the Coliseum and running the 5 or 10K through the Figueroa Corridor and on streets just outside of the USC campus. One dollar of every entry fee was donated to USC Football Coach Pete Carroll’s philanthropy,A Better LA.

Along the way, music pumped up the athletes and projections on buildings of other Human Race events from cities like Seoul, Rome and New York motivated runners with themes of unity and inspiration. People emerged from their homes or sat in their windows to cheer as the joggers went by. Even the most jaded of security guards could be seen shooting photos with their cell phones and giving hi-fives to participants.

Many of the runners were trained using the Nike+ system and the company’s online coaching tools - a system which has gained an almost fanatic following with 2 million members worldwide.

Nike+ Human Race 2009 inspires hundreds of thousands of runners to lace up and run

TORONTO, Oct. 24 /CNW/ - Today, NIKE, Inc. hosted the second annual Nike+ Human Race 10K as hundreds of thousands of runners hit the road as part of the world's largest one-day running event. Nike hosted Nike+ Human Race events in 27 cities globally, from Vancouver to Toronto, Los Angeles to Seoul and from Tel Aviv to Rome. Thousands more runners joined the Nike+ Human Race by logging their own 10-kilometre runs on race day using their Nike+ Sport Kit or Nike+ Sportband.

In Canada, organized group 10K runs occurred in Running Rooms in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Pointe-Claire and Halifax. Elite Canadian athletes including 2008 Olympic Silver Medalist Simon Whitfield, 800M World Silver Medalist,Gary Reed, Speed Skater Kristina Groves and 2009 World Silver Medalist Priscilla Lopes-Schliep were on hand at Running Room locations, cheering on and encouraging participants to the finish line.

Thousands of Canadians ran in the Nike+ Human Race 10K events across the country today.

New York City runs Nike+ Human Race 10k

New York City was one of 24 cities worldwide to officially participate in the second annual Human Race, a 10k race hosted by Nike over a 24 hour time period on October 24, 2009. By including cities around the world and allowing runners who are not located near one of the host cities to log their time using either a Nike+ iPod or Nike+ SportBand, Nike created a truly global event, one that is being called "The Day the World Runs".

The New York City Nike Human Race took place at 8:00 a.m. in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. 3,464 runners participated and finished with an average pace time of 1:02:55. Weather conditions for this morning's race were ideal, as rain held off and temperatures averaged in the low 60's.

In the men's division, Tom Papain came in first, with a finish time of 34:38. Following Papain were Felipe Vergara and William Wells, with finish times of 35:59 and 36:26, respectively.

Jessica Shultz was the top female finisher, placing first in 39:18. Stacey Barron and Kim Delany came in second and third with finish times of 39:21 and 40:48.

Runners around the world have currently logged almost 400,000 miles and many of the events are set to take place later today. All results are being posted online as races are completed.

Runners were able to make this a truly team event if they chose to connect with a Race Ambassadoror Team in Training, the official charity for the NYC event. Post race celebrations in Prospect Park included refreshments, massages, and a concert by Matt & Kim.

Other participating locations in the US included Ohio State University and University of Southern California.

Belding joins London, Los Angeles, other cities worldwide in hosting Nike+ Human Race

Few people would compare the cities of Buenos Aires, Istanbul, London, Los Angeles, Rome and Taipei with Belding.

They will come Saturday.

Belding, with a population of 5,691, will join 24 cities worldwide as sites for the second annual 10K Nike+ Human Race.

The Belding event -- called the Nike+ Human Race at the Every Stride 5K/10K -- combines last year's Every Stride 5K/10K with the global Nike 10K run.

How this road run marriage came about was a combination of success at the 2008 Every Stride 5K/10K at Candlestone Golf and Resort and the date of Saturday's race.

"We expected to have a couple hundred runners last year," Every Stride race director Chris Nicholas said. "But it just blew up, and we wound up with about 750 runners for a first-year event that went very smoothly.

"Nike did their Human Race last year on Labor Day, liked the way it went and decided to move it to October this year on the same day as our two runs."

Nike also was looking to place one of its races in Michigan. So company officials placed a call to Gazelle Sports, which has been a longtime sponsor of local road runs, is a sponsor of the Every Stride and helped sponsor the inaugural Human Race.
