BEND -- Kellie Schueler versus Kayla Smith might go down as one of the best competitive matchups in Oregon girls high school athletics history, and the crowd at Summit High School honored the sprinters at the inaugural Oregon Elite Invitational.

BEND, Ore., Oct. 7, 2008 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- With their existing track in need of replacement, administrators at Summit High School here saw an opportunity to provide a world-class facility for their students and other members of the community. As a result, the school now has a completely renovated outdoor track featuring Mondotrack, the same track surface that was used at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Summit High School is one of the first high schools in the nation - and the first in Oregon - with Mondotrack.

Two years ago, Summmit High track coach was reviewing entry lists for the OSAA championship track meet when he blurted out loud to a couple of other coaches something to the effect of:

"We should have a meet the week after state that brings all the class champions together so the top kids can compete against one another."

He may have been thinking primarily of his own 5A stars, Kellie Schueler and Alyssa O'Connor, who were having a much-too-easy time of it against 5A competition.
