Flanagan Announces Pacers for American Marathon Record AttemptPublished by
Vail, Watson Lead Efforts in BerlinBy Scott Bush Early Wednesday morning, Shalane Flanagan announced via Twitter that professional marathoners Ryan Vail (USA) and Rob Watson (CAN) were set to pace her on her American marathon record attempt later this month at the BMW Berlin Marathon. For the past few months, Flanagan has stated her desire to take down Deena Kastor's American record of 2:19:36, set in 2006. Flanagan ran a personal best earlier this year at the Boston Marathon, where she led for much of the race before falling off the pace and finishing in 2:22:02, good for seventh overall, while knocking three and a half minutes off her previous best. Vail and Watson are both accomplished marathoners themselves. Vail finished tenth at the Virgin Money London Marathon earlier this year with a personal best of 2:10:57, while Watson ran personal bests of 2:13:29 and 1:03:22 in the marathon and half marathon in 2013. As both prepare to compete in their own marathons this fall, Vail focused on the TCS New York City Marathon and Watson set to tackle the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, they will use Berlin as a tune-up run themselves, while helping Flanagan go for history. Get excited for the BMW Berlin Marathon, September 28, as Flanagan runs a torrid pace, driven to prove herself the fastest American marathoner of all-time.
