FPC's Wynn and Clark winners at Celebration 5K

With the completion of the regular track season several weeks ago, a good many Florida harriers are in the midst of their #SummerMiles in preparation for the 2015 Cross Country season.

The 4th of July weekend always brings various activities and events for both the young and old to enjoy.  For runners, that may include getting up early to go run a celebratory 5K, 10-miler, or fun run.

Whatever the case,  you'll most definitely see runners sporting their red, white, and blue on the July 4th weekend as Americans come together to enjoy the freedoms we cherish and the official holiday to celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Over the next few weeks we'll see runners take to the roads not only for summer camp but also to toe the line and test their endurance and strength in road races of various lengths.

On Saturday July 4th, on Florida's East Coast, Palm Coast hosted their annual Celebration 5K.

With most of the running community along with current and past runners from both Flagler Palm Coast High School and Matanzas High School amongst the field, it's always interesting to see who will take it out and who will emerge as the champion.

FPC's Ka'Deem Wynn was the overall winner in the Men's Division and Sophia Clark won the Female 15-19 age group Division, finishing 3rd overall.

Wynn, a rising senior for the Bulldogs went 17:10, winning comfortably by 37 seconds over fellow teammate Justin Pacifico.

Sophia Cark, an FPC 2015 graduate and Florida Atlantic University signee, won the Female 15-19 Division in 21:11, finishing 3rd overall.

"The race didn't go exactly how I planned it," Wynn said afterwards. "I had a few goals in mind, and oddly enough, I didn't hit any of them."

The game plan was to run under 17 minutes. Wynn said that he felt that he was in good enough shape to crank out at least a high 16:50s performance, even this early. Though the goal wasn't met, he still improved his 5K time from last year by four seconds.

"I got out from the beginning of the race, and I stayed with the small group of us who led the first mile, then I started moving."

During the first mile, Wynn sat comfortably in third. He said that he felt unusually relaxed, which was a good thing. He said that just before the 1.5 mile mark, he sat in second, and waited behind the leader.

"I thought 'Wow. I can actually win this thing.' So I took the lead, and went to work after that."

Wynn said that the second half of the race felt a little difficult, but overall he thought that he ran a smart race. A race that he sees as a stepping stone.

"This was a major confidence booster for me. The past two cross country seasons haven't been the best."

Over the past month, Wynn has logged  total of 183.36 miles, as well as a total of 173.8 miles on a bike.

"Biking has definitely helped get me stronger."

Wynn adds that though this was a big step for him, it was for his team as well. Especially with it being senior year, he wants to do everything possible to help make his team better.

"Like most teams, we're looking to not only make it back to the state meet, but we see a shot at the podium," he says. "It's been a while since coach has won a state title, and we're looking to surprise a lot of people."
