Grants Pass, Barlow grab 6A team wins

Despite the similarity of the names, the boys track teams from Grants Pass and Grant (Portland) couldn’t be much more different.

Grants Pass is rural. It’s Southern Oregon. And the Cavemen won their first state track title on Saturday at Hayward Field with a team of throwers and jumpers to complement Zac Hannan, a sprinter and hurdler. The group piled up 63.5 points.

Grant was the urban from team from Portland with pizzazz in the sprints, but it needed to score by the 10s and came up a little bit short. When Harrison Schrage’s injured ankle wouldn’t perform in the triple jump, the Generals’ hopes of winning its first title since 1988 were put further out reach. Schrage defended his long jump title on Friday but was unable to rise out of the prelims in the triple jump. Winning that event was a longshot anyway because Tristan James of West Salem won his third straight title with US#8 49-1.50.

Grant finished second with 51 points.

Grants Pass got only one win, and it came from Keil Nicholas in the javelin (189-2). The team also got a big third-place from John Hanley (183-0) and those 16 points were a big piece of the Cavemen’s title puzzle. Hannan scored 20 points (a second and two thirds) in the 100, 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

The 6A boys meet also marked the ascendance of Jackson Mestler in the distances. The junior from Sheldon stole the show in the absence of Matthew Maton and used patience and well-timed kicks to win the 3,000 meters on Friday and the 1,500 on Saturday. Mestler ran 8:34.80 in the 3,000 and 3:55.67 in the 1,500 – both were PRs.

Grant senior Julius Shellmire was the high point scorer in 6A after bringing the Generals home in second place in the 4x100, finishing second in the 100, winning the 200, and anchoring his team to yet another second in the 4x400.

That 4x400, by the way, saw a dramatic conclusion to cap three days of action at Hayward Field before a combined attendance of 23,000. Tigard anchor Tyler Rossette caught Shellmire and nosed him out 3:19.99 to 3:20.31.

The 6A girls meet belonged to Barlow of Gresham, thanks to a sprint crew that was on fire. After running the second-fastest 4x100 time in Oregon history (46.72), the quartet of Macie Allen, Renick Meyer, Sara Turner and Danelle Woodcock went to work on individual events and stacked up points in the sprints and hurdles.

Woodcock, Turner and Allen swept 1-2-3 in the 100 meters for 24 points. Woodcock and Turner went 1-5 in the 200 for 14 more.

The Bruins scored 57 points for the team victory. Jesuit was second with 52, Grant was third with 49 and Central Catholic was fourth with 47.

Grant junior Ella Donaghu won the 6A 1,500 in US#8 4:28.72 for a six and a half second win over South Eugene senior Sara Tsai. And the in the 800, Donaghu defended her older sister Piper’s title, running 2:13.69.

In Class 5A, Summit of Bend rolled to its ninth consecutive title with a whopping record 151 points. For much of the meet, Summit was on a pace to average 10 points per event.

Freshman Piper Flannery and sophomore Olivia Brooks show that there is probably no end in sight to the Storm’s dominance if it continues to be placed in 5A competition. Flannery won the 400 meters (56.29) and was third in the 200. Brooks won the 3,000 (9:53.59) and the 1,500 (4:37.90).

Hillsboro, led by sparkplug Anna Dean in the hurdles, finished second with 69 points.

Jestena Mattson of Hood River Valley posted the state’s fastest times in the 100 (11.86) and 200 (24.51).

Lebanon scored big points in the field events to win the boys 5A title with 74 points. John Bates was the standout, with wins in the javelin and 110 hurdles, plus second in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump.

Crescent Valley duo Matthew McGowen (3:59.51) and Justice Lamer (3:59.69) went 1-2 in the 5A 1,500 meters.

In the 2A boys javelin, Jackson Van Vuren of Faith Bible got a big last throw with US#7 201-9.

In the 3A pole vault, Justin Petz of La Pine came into the competition after everyone else had been retired. Then he cleared a bar at 16-6 and took three strong attempts at 17 feet.
