How can we top a weekend like the one we experienced this weekend! The month of May came in with flurry with so many great performances. It is just a prelude of what we should expect as we head down the road to Charleston for the Girls and Boys State Meets at the end of the month.

You can read about the Wanner Knights Invitational that took place at Prospect High School on Friday evening here. Some of the great performances at that meet rubbed off on the other meets that took place Thursday through Saturday. Let’s take a look at some of the things that happened throughout the state as well as the surrounding states where Illinois athletes competed in meets.

Palatine Relays – Results

Palatine edged Barrington to take the MSL-West Divisional championships Tuesday afternoon. The tables were turned on Palatine’s home track Saturday as Barrington defeated host Palatine by four points. The fun part of this conference rivalry is that the two teams will face each other the rest of the meets heading to Charleston. Barrington perhaps had one of the best performances of the meet running 3:54.58 (IL #2) to win the 1600 Meter Relay to close the meet. Palatine was almost nine seconds back in second place. Addison Coy took part in that relay for the Fillies. She started the day for her team winning the 300 Hurdles (44.32, IL #4) by almost two seconds ahead of Whitney Ward (Brooks College Prep, Chicago).

The best performance by a Girls athlete in this meet came from Palatine’s Kelly O’Brien. The junior won two events along with anchoring Palatine’s 1600 Meter Relay. She started the day by running the fastest 3A time in the state (2:12.22) winning the 800 Meter Run by almost five seconds ahead of Renee Letz (Sandburg HS, Orland Park). O’Brien came back to easily win the 1600 (5:01.55) with a 15 second winning margin ahead of Barrington’s Jocelyn Long. Nina Hodges (Barrington HS) also had a great meet winning the 100 Meter Dash (12.58) and the 200 Meter Dash (25.99). Hodges’ win in the 100 was only six hundredths of a second ahead of Jaimie Robinson (DeLaSalle Institute, Chicago). Robinson did secure a Palatine Relays Championship by winning the Triple Jump (38-11 ½) by almost three feet ahead of her nearest competition.

Barrington’s Boys team made it a sweep for their school winning the team championship ahead of Fremd. Scotty Miller led his team winning the 100 Meter Dash (10.80) and the 200 Meter Dash (22.29). Peyton Chapman (Bolingbrook HS) made a name for himself leading the 800 leaderboards most of the indoor season. The senior stepped back into the spotlight winning the 800 Meter Run (1:55.74) more than a second ahead of Konrad Eiring (Barrington HS) and Graham Brown (Palatine HS). Brown came back later in the meet to win the 1600 Meter Run (4:23.14) in his final Palatine Relays race. The margin of victory was only a second ahead of Fremd’s Danny Peterson (4:23.14 – 4:24.12).

Zach Dale (Conant HS, Hoffman Estates) came back from his fast 1600 at Prospect Friday night to lead his team to the fastest time in the state in the Distance Medley Relay (10:31.31) to win eight seconds ahead of Barrington. Jake LaRocca (Palatine HS) won the Pole Vault clearing 15-9. Matt Haller (Barrington HS) upped his personal best two inches in clearing 6-7 to win the High Jump. Palatine’s Dan Garcia cleared 6-5 to place second.

WWS Girls Tiger Invitational – Results

The best Girls meet of the weekend took place on the southwest side of Wheaton. This meet is known for its great distance performances. This year, again, was no exception. Michaela Hackbarth (Downers Grove South HS) ran the second fastest 3A time in the state (3rd state overall) in winning the 800 Meter Run. Hackbarth’s time of 2:13.95 was just over a second ahead of second place Claire Hamilton (Naperville North HS) who ran 2:15.09 (IL #6). Hamilton’s teammate Judy Pendergast placed third. Sophomore Sara Atkins (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS) won the 1600 Meter Run (5:08.73) on her home track ahead of second place Sara Schmitt (Naperville North HS). Elizabeth Hagstrom (York HS, Elmhurst) ran a 12 second personal best to finish third (5:10.72). Eleven runners ran under 5:20 in that event Friday night.

Only three seconds separated the first three runners in the 3200 Meter Run. Abby Kargol (Downers Grove South HS) came out of the race victorious (10:58.73) with Grace McCabe (Hinsdale Central HS) less than two seconds behind (11:00.04). Elly DeTurris (Naperville North HS) was another second back in third place (11:01.37).  Schaumburg crossed the line first in the 3200 Meter Relay (9:27.71, IL #5) finishing nine seconds ahead of Naperville Central and Glenbard West.

It was close in the 100 Meter Dash as Jessica Watkins (Bolingbrook HS) nipped Natajah Simmons (Oswego HS) to win the 100 Meter Dash by two hundredths of a second (12.11 – 12.13). Simmons also finished second in the 200 Meter Dash behind the 24.73 winning time by Norma Abdur-Rafia (Oak Park-River Forest HS).

Princess Shodipo (Oswego HS) was in command of the hurdles winning both the 100 (15.03) and 300 Hurdles (46.71). She also won the Long Jump with a 16-10 ¼ performance. Heidi Nassos (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS) was the meet’s other multiple event winner as she won the Triple Jump (35-4) and the Pole Vault (11-0).

The three other relay events produced top five state winning performances. Bolingbrook won the 400 Meter Relay (48.14, IL #3) ahead of Morgan Park (48.35) and Oak Park-River Forest (48.66). The Lady Huskies came back to win the 800 Meter Relay (1:42.48, IL #3) more than a second ahead of Oswego, Hinsdale Central, and Morgan Park who were only separated by three tenths of a second. Morgan Park closed the meet winning the 1600 Meter Relay (3:56.89, IL #4) winning by four seconds ahead of WSC-Silver’s Oak Park River Forest and Hinsdale Central.

Jim Arnold Invitational @ Glenbard West HS – Results

Edwardsville came up to the Chicago area and left with the Jim Arnold Meet championship. The Tigers scored 111 points winning seven events to outdistance second place Evanston Township. Wes Schoenthal once again stood out winning two distance events demonstrating he should be a runner to watch in Charleston at the end of the month.

Schoenthal started his day by running a personal best 1:54.81 (IL #5) to win the 800 Meter Run by two seconds ahead of Irwin Loud (Oak Park-River Forest HS) who also ran a personal best in the race (1:56.93). The two runners faced off again in the 1600 Meter Run. Schoenthal needed a strong final kick to distance himself from Loud and win by a second (4:21.14 – 4:22.28). Brydon Groves-Scott made it a distance sweep for Edwardsville in this meet winning the 3200 Meter Run (9:40.86) winning by four seconds ahead of Eric Neumann (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn). Edwardsville also got a win on the track by winning the 1600 Meter Relay holding off Oak Park-River Forest for the win (3:23.79 – 3:24.04).

Fontez Davis (Edwardsville HS) jumped a season’s best 23-2 to win the Long Jump. Teammate Tariq Minor won the Triple Jump (45-2). In a big showdown in the Discus, sophomore AJ Epenesa (Edwardsville HS) threw 186-8 to win the event by less than a foot ahead of Lake Park’s Mike Prestigiacoma (185-10). Prestigiacoma came back to win the Shot Put in a seasonal best 59-7 ½ (IL #3) to finish two feet ahead of teammate Dylan Schierich.

Glenbard West had their only win in the varsity meet in the 3200 Meter Relay. Their 7:51.31 (IL #3) winning time was 14 seconds ahead of conference rival Oak Park-River Forest. Evanston Township came out on top of the other two relays. The Wildkits won the 400 Meter Relay (42.49, IL #10) to finish ahead of Oak Park-River Forest and Bartlett. Evanston ran 1:29.30 (IL #8) to win the 800 Meter Relay by two seconds ahead of Bartlett and Edwardsville. Evanston also won the three individual sprints with Reggie Murphy capturing the 100 (10.95) nipping Jack Curtis (Glenbard South HS, Glen Ellyn) by one hundredth of a second. The sprint athletes took advantage of the near perfect conditions Friday night putting up some of the top performances in the state. Tyjuana Eason (Kankakee HS) emerged from this meet as one of the favorite in the 2A sprints with a double win in highly competitive fields. She ran her best time of the year (12.00) to win the 100 Meter Dash ahead of Centennial’s Dominique Lewis (12.12). Red Ribbon Classic @ Waubonsie Valley HS – Results

Neuqua Valley scored 157 points to win the varsity team championship by more than 40 points ahead of Minooka. The story of the meet, however, occurred during the 300 Meter Intermediate Hurdles. On what was a calm summer afternoon, a microburst swept across the Waubonsie Valley track first lifting up the Pole Vault pit and moving it to the middle if the infield and then damaging two team tents on the east side of the facility outside of the track. No one was hurt but the “freak” wind storm delayed the meet close to 30 minutes.

Zac Espinosa (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville) was the individual story of the meet picking up wins in the 400 and 200 Meter Dashes. The 400 was supposed to be a dual between Espinosa and his teammate Ty Moss. It was not the case as Moss got off to a bad start stumbling out of the blocks. It was all Espinosa from there. He finished with the state’s fastest time so far this season in the event in winning (47.81). Moss did finish second (48.94, IL #9). Espinosa controlled the 200 again getting off to a great start. He ran 21.78 to hold off Dwight Johnson (Thornwood HS, South Holland) for the win.

Moss was part of Neuqua Valley’s winning 3200 Meter Relay (7:54.42). The Wildcats and Hoffman Estates were even when Moss got the baton for his anchor leg. The race was won when Moss ran his first 400 in 52 seconds. His 1:51.4 split gave his team a 15 second win. Waubonsie Valley swept the hurdle races in this meet. Tyler Kirkwood ran 14.82 to win the 110 Meter High Hurdles fifteen hundredths ahead of Justin Wolz (Minooka HS).  Jeff Penny took the lead in the 300 Intermediate Hurdles coming into the final straight and held on to run 40.33 for the win. Soren Knudsen (Minnoka HS) led wire to wire in the 1600 Meter Run. His 4:26.94 winning time was almost three seconds faster than runner up Patrick Wolak (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville).
