Rodgers on Running Fast

By Scott Bush

Mike Rodgers is one of the most consistent, top-level sprinters in the world. The 29-year old had another terrific season in 2014, running the fourth fastest (wind-legal) 100m time in the world with a 9.91 effort. His top five fastest 100m performances average out to 9.94, which only trails Justin Gatlin's magical season. In addition, the 2009 USA 100m Champion added another U.S. title to his collection as he took home the top spot at USA Outdoors, while proving he's a legit medal threat in Beijing at the 2015 World Outdoor Championships.

We caught up with Rodgers recently, reviewing his season, discussing his consistency and keeping an eye on the future.

Scott Bush (SB): You’re coming off a very success season, where you ranked #4 in the world over 100m and contended for the win in some very big races. How are you feeling now that you've had some time to reflect?

Mike Rodgers (MR): I had a great season. I feel like it could have been better and I would of ran faster if I didn't have the break due to Euro Champs and Commonwealth, which kinda took away from my rhythm. So, I guess time wise, I'm pleased to have one of the top times in the world. The Track and Field News rankings haven't came out yet so I hope to be in that top 2!

SB: Every athlete enters a season with things to work on. What did you work on during the 2014 season and how do you feel it progressed?

MR: I really didn't work on that much this season. I took a lighter base due to the off year to save myself for next year. I also went heavier in the weight room to get stronger and it showed at the end of my races.

SB: With next year being a World Championship year, what changes in your approach?

MR: With next year being a World Champ year, I'm going to prepare with a full base for the fall and incorporate more speed work in my training.

SB: You’ve become one of the most consistent athletes in the 100m. What do you attribute your consistency to?

MR: Just hard work and I focus on my craft by studying my competitions by watching film. At this point in my career it's the little things.

SB: The season just ended and I assume you're taking some time off now. Any fun travel or exciting plans being put into motion during the next few weeks?

MR: I may take a trip or two, I haven't decided yet, but I'll be spending the majority of time with my three year old Braylon this off season.

SB: You’ve had a chance to compete in some of the coolest places on the planet. Do you any events stand out above the rest?

MR: I feel that the London Anniversary Games were by far the best even though  I missed the Olympics due to injury…but I surely won't miss Rio.
