SEATTLE - The Washington Invitational returns for a second go-round at Jefferson Park Golf Course this Friday, with another stellar field assembled for an early fall cross country challenge. For the Huskies, it’s never too early to start picking up some head-to-head wins against top competition, and Friday’s race will provide ample opportunity, as the men’s and women’s races feature a combined seven opponents ranked in the top-25 nationally.

The UW Invite will be a quick and spectator-friendly event, with just the two races on Friday afternoon. The women’s 6,000-meters will go off at 3:15 p.m. followed by the men’s 8,000-meters at 4:00 p.m.

Washington will get an early glimpse of some of its top Pac-12 competition on Friday, as Oregon, Stanford, Washington State, and UCLA will be running men’s and women’s squads, along with Oregon State in the women’s race.

The men’s field looks especially deep and competitive, with four highly ranked squads and two more receiving votes out of the 11 teams competing. No. 2-ranked Stanford and No. 5-ranked Oregon will be challenged by 11th-ranked UCLA and 12th-ranked BYU. The Huskies are receiving votes in the most recent national poll, as is perennial NCAA qualifier Portland. Adding more to the Northwest feel will be Gonzaga, Seattle U., and Eastern Washington.

The same field will race on the women’s side, with the addition of the Beavers. The Huskies go into the meet ranked 15th and will look to upset No. 4 Stanford and No. 5 Oregon in the team battle, with No. 23 BYU also fielding a fast squad.

Two weeks ago, the Huskies got their season rolling at the Sundodger Invite, with the women posting the best winning score in meet history, led by Maddie Meyers in second-place, with Charlotte ProuseAnna Maxwell, and Lindsey Bradley right behind in places 3, 4, and 5. Senior Izaic Yorks won the individual title on the men’s side but the Dawgs finished second right behind Washington State, now getting a chance at redemption less than two weeks later.

Racing for the 15th-ranked women’s squad will be the group that went 2-5 at Sundodger: Meyers, Prouse, Maxwell, and Bradley. Meyers was third overall at the Washington Invitational a year ago. Sophomore Katie Knight, senior Eleanor Fulton, sophomore Kelly Lawson, senior Jenna Sanders, and freshman Emily Hamlin should also be factors on Friday.

The men’s squad will go with a group led by Yorks and senior Tyler King, along with sophomores Fred HuxhamAndrew GardnerJohnathan Stevens, and Keith Williams, redshirt freshman Mahmoud Moussa, and freshman Charlie Barringer running in uniform for the first time. Sophomore Colby Gilbert could potentially make his season debut as well, according to Head Coach Greg Metcalf. Yorks, the Sundodger champ, is the top returning Husky finisher from 2014, as he placed 15th in this meet.
