Talie Bonds, an Arizona senior and the reigning Pac-12 women's outdoor high jump champion and an NCAA Division 1 All-American in the 60-meter hurdles, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her pursuit of becoming the first 100-meter hurdles conference champion in program history May 14 at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif., along with attempting to repeat in the high jump. Bonds, the conference female scholar-athlete of the year with a 3.91 GPA, has the potential to become the first athlete in conference history to win both a hurdles crown and a high jump title. She is also looking to eclipse the 1998 conference championship record of 12.61 established by UCLA's Gail Devers. Bonds, who set the Arizona program record April 15 by clocking a wind-legal 12.65 at the 63rd Mt. SAC Relays, is also targeting the Hilmer Lodge Stadium all-time mark of 12.46 achieved last year by Tonea Marshall. She is also looking to become the first repeat Pac-12 women's high jump champion since Arizona's Lisanne Hagens in 2016-17. Bonds analyzes the depth of the Wildcats' high jump group, including Alexa Porpaczy, Emma Gates and Paris Mikinski, and their quest to sweep the podium in the May 14 final. She expresses gratitude for the guidance and support of Arizona high jump coach Bob Myers, as well as Wildcats head coach and hurdling mentor Fred Harvey. Bonds examines how meaningful it was to run a wind-aided 12.85 seconds at last year's NCAA West Regionals in Arkansas, and how validating it was to reach her first Division 1 outdoor championship meet last season at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. She revisits achieving a program-record 8.01 in the 60 hurdles and earning All-America honors at the Division 1 indoor final in March at the Albuquerque Convention Center in New Mexico. Bonds speaks about her family's legacy in track and field at Las Vegas Centennial High, plus her older sister Tiana competing at Arizona, Talie beginning her collegiate career at Utah State, as well as younger siblings Quincy at Utah Valley and Zoey at Brigham Young. Bonds, who ranks No. 10 in the world this year, also looks forward to future races against elite hurdlers in June at the Division 1 outdoor final in Austin, Texas, and July at the USATF Outdoor Championships in Oregon.
