Derek Smith, a senior at Buchanan High in California, finished second in the gold section of the discus throw and shot put at the West Coast Relays at his home venue Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis, Calif. Smith achieved a personal-best 58-9.50 (17.92m) in the shot put and had a discus performance of 180-3 (54.95m).
