CIGNA Falmouth Road Race Mile
Saturday, August 8, 2009
The men’s 2009 CIGNA Falmouth Mile saw strong representation from
the Oregon Track Club, as Will Leer (Eugene, Ore.) won in 3:57.28 with
Stephen Pifer (Edwardsville, Ill.) just behind in 3:58.58. Tommy
Schmitz (Mineral Point, Wis.) missed breaking four minutes with a time
of 4:00.80 while Sean Brosnan (Eugene, Ore.) and Josephat Keino
(Aurora, Col.) finished in 4:06.15 and 4:11.17 respectively. Oregon
Track Club runners, Leer and Pifer quickly cut to the inside and hit
200 meters in 28.5 seconds. Darren Brown (Austin, Tex.), who dropped
out after 1000 meters, was in the third position after a 59.1-second
opening lap with Brosnan, Keino and Schmitz right behind.
Pifer
took the lead after 800 meters in a 1:59.4 split with Leer still on his
shoulder. Schmitz followed with Brosnan and Keino falling off the sub
4-minute pace as one lap remained. Leer overtook Pifer with 160 meters
to go and accelerated off the turn to the finish. His winning time at
this year’s Falmouth Mile is the tenth fastest by an American this
year, and tops his fourth-place finish last year by more than 3
seconds.
Both Leer and Pifer will be in contention tomorrow for the 37th running of the CIGNA Falmouth Road Race tomorrow.
