A lot has changed since Grant Fisher, Andrew Hunter and Mike Brannigan last visited The Armory for March’s New Balance National’s Indoor. There, Fisher and Hunter won titles in the mile (4:03.54) and 2-mile (8:48.22), respectively, and Brannigan earned second place honors in the 5,000m (14:42.33).

Since then, along with their combined 22 race victories, Fisher has become just the seventh high school athlete to run under four minutes in the mile (3:59.38), Hunter has become the second male high school athlete in Penn Relays history to pull off a mile/3,000m double victory (4:07:15 and 8:16.31) and Brannigan led 10 high school runners to dip under nine minutes in the 3,200m in a Loucks Games record-breaking time of 8:42.92.

Fisher, Hunter and Brannigan last saw each other at this past weekend’s adidas Grand Prix Dream Mile, where they finished a tactical race in that order with times of 4:01.73, 4:02.36 and 4:03.18.

And though theirs was one of many junior races placed amongst a schedule featuring some of the world’s biggest track and field stars, the Boys adidas Dream Mile ended up being one of the meet’s more talked about races. Fisher was even popular enough to be added as one of seven featured athletes in the meet's press conference

“I go back to my home and its in a pretty small town and people know me, but it’s weird to think that people outside of there would know me,” said Fisher, a senior from Grand Blanc, MI. “I just like to get out there and compete and if recognition comes that’s great, if not that’s fine too.”

“It’s incredible,” said Hunter, a junior from Loudon Valley, VA, when asked how he felt about the extra attention that high school distance running has been receiving lately. “It’s great that we could provide a great race so that the fans didn’t just have to wait until the Diamond League races started.”

After the Dream Mile, Brannigan, a senior from Northport, NY, confirmed that the three were friends, but still competitors who all want to win. They’ll see each other again in this upcoming weekend’s Brooks PR Invitational 2-mile in Seattle, WA.

Last year in Seattle, Fisher came away with a 8:51.28 2-mile victory and Brannigan led Northport to nearly break the 4xmile national record with a 17:06.92 finish.

“The field at Brooks was stacked in the 2-mile last year and it’s more stacked this year,” said Fisher in a recent interview with MileSplit. “I think it has a great possibility to go well under 8:50 and I’m hoping it does.”

It will be Hunter’s first trip to the meet.

“I felt like winning that 2-mile at The Armory was a good indication of how strong I was,” said Hunter. “Now that there’s two more weeks in my season I’m happy with how the race went [at the adidas Grand Prix] and I’m excited for Brooks.”

Fisher and Hunter are also entered in the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships 1,500m, taking place on June 25-27 in Eugene, OR.
