I slept on it and came up with a better solution to the relay problem... Just take one qualifier from each league instead of two, and fill out the other lanes with a wildcard system like already exists in 6A. There's also already a precedent for handling relays differently than other events, with the auto-qualifiers being based on a different formula.

4A would get one extra qualifier based on fastest District Meet time, 5A would get three, and 6A would get two.

I've always hated the 3-turn stagger of the 4x400. It yields totally non-competitive lead-off legs in nearly every race. I know it would be tougher to manage the first exchange without it, but that's part of what makes the relay exciting! I would love to see it tried with a 1-turn stagger (800m cut-in on the first leg) or a waterfall start. The latter would solve the 2-heat final problem and make for a doubly entertaining race. But, it doesn't fit with the rule books, so it's probably too much to wish for.

They probably just need to bite the bullet and make the day session of day 2 longer with relay prelims. Perhaps give thought to moving the 3k to day 3 (day 2 for big schools) with the rest of the running event finals, following a traditional 1-day meet format. That would keep the days more in balance.

I gotta say agree with Dan about the two section finals in the relays.
I understand that it's an experiment and with this new three-day, six class format there probably isn't time for prelims in those events.

But the meet shouldn't drag on like that, especially what happened on Friday night at the end of the small-schools meet. A first section of four teams and a second section of five or six ... was ridiculous. The teams were so far spaced out that even the threadbare promise of competition was lost. And it was cold. And too long.

My two cents.
dkap
Fair point. It's been a while since Oregon girls have put up 3k times comparable to the low ten minute 2-miles of the elites. I need to get with the times. :)

Love seeing those top marks for Oregonians! Although, the 3k and Javelin always deserve asterisks (IMO) due to how few states have those events.

Dan

True, but any time approaching 9:30 in the girls 3k is going to be US Top-10/15 when you combine the 3k-2mile events. And it helps when meets like Arcadia and NBON get 3k splits en route to their longer distances.

Best athlete of Saturday's session is probably Venessa D'Arpino, with this triple: 12.04 for a meet record in the 100, 24.11 for a meet record in the 200 and 54.68 for a meet record in the 400.

Her sister Kerisaa was right behind her.

Venessa is now No. 12 all-time (all classes) in the 100, No. 4 in the 200 and No. 5 in the 400.

And the twins are both juniors. Wow.

I'm on board with that! Thoroughly dominating performance, made all the more impressive by having some historically strong competition to beat out. And add in some great 4x400 running in what will be an overlooked performance due to the dropped baton.

CC with a bit of a lead at the break, Canby closing in on WS. South Salem into 4th but well behind 3rd. 51.5/1:41.9 2nd leg, Canby up with CC but CC's #3 pulling away on the turn. WS back into 2nd, CC with a 10m lead at 200m. Canby coming back on the turn. 51.3/2:33.1 slight lead for CC as WS/Canby almost catch up, but CC anchor out hard again to open up a 10-15m lead at 200m. Turnover looks too slow to hold it. Here comes Canby past WS, but lots to make up.... CC 49.5 just holds off Canby, 3:22.90 to 3:23.23. WS 3:24.42, Newberg 3:27.32.

Yellow flag is up now on the turn. Not sure how the first official missed it mere inches away, but he seems to be getting overruled. Three officials conferring.

OSAA needs to re-think the 2-heat finals for relays. Energy is starting to dissipate in the stadium as we near the end of the meet. Should be electricity, but people are getting tired...

Boys 5a 4x400 heat 2 ... 51.7 leadoff for Woodburn, Liberty up iinto the lead along with Sherwood off the break. Crescent Valley big move coming up on 200m to move into the lead at the turn, but Sherwood comes back. 51.5/1:43.2 Sherwood, CV in 2nd then Liberty back 10m. Sherwood pulling away on the backstretch. Liberty into 2nd with 150m left. CV gets tripped from behind and drops baton! Official right there and doesn't raise a flag... 51.1/2:34.3 Sherwood. Two officials talking, likely a protest or overrule of some sort to come... Sherwood uncontested on anchor, 50.2/3:24.78. Madison 3:27.62, Hood River 3:28.19, Liberty 3:28.22.

Marist (5A) was the 15'6" pole vaulter.

That 6A girls 4x4 was sensational, three teams from the middle of Portland.

Lincoln No. 2 all-time
Grant No. 3 all-time
Central Catholic No. 5 all-time

Boys 4a 4x400 heat 2 ... Hidden Valley 51.1 early lead, 5 man pack chasing 10m behind. Lead is shrinking slightly on the 2nd turn, but still a healthy margin for HV. 51.5/1:42.6 for HV, out fast on 2nd leg to open the gap to 15-20m. Tilamook in 2nd, Scappoose now passes Tilamook. HV still out in front but Scappoose closing to within 10m off the 2nd turn. 51.3/2:33.9 HV, getting tight on the backstretch with Scappoose and Tillamook in striking distance, plus two more teams moving up in black. One is Newport, maybe Philomath in 4th. HV barely holds on with 50.7/3:24.78. Scappoose 3:24.93, Tillamook 3:25.26, Newport 3:27.27, Philomath 3:27.78.

6a girls 4x400 heat 2 ... West Linn leadoff out very fast. Has most of the stagger made up by 200m. Lincoln and Central Catholic closing on the turn. Grant holding strong on the outside. 57.7 leadoff, Central Catholic with a small lead. West Linn out hard again on 2nd leg to take the lead back. Grant settles into 3rd, Lincoln in 4th. Tightly bunched at 200m, then a gap back to Jesuit and St. Mary's. Make that Grant in 5th. Not sure of the blue team in 4th. 59.4/1:57.1 for Central Catholic.

Grants Pass is the other blue team, now dropping back. West Linn out strong again, takes the lead from CC. Grant in 3rd, Lincoln in 4th. Grant moving up into 2nd, West Linn still with a decent lead. Cc holding 2nd now. Into 1st... 58.8/2:56.0 for West Linn and CC in a dead heat at 1200m, West Linn again out very hard but Grant moving up with 200m left. Four in striking distance. Three across at the finish!!! 56.2/3:52.47 for Lincoln. 3:52.55 Grant, 3:52.62 Central Catholic, 3:53.57 Grants Pass, 3:53.64 West Linn. Heck of a finish.

6a girls 4x400 heat 1 ... start is called back, Sprague's leadoff being talked to by the official but appears she's still in. May have taken too long getting ready with the one-block semi standing start. Getting them back in the blocks. Sprauge out well after the restart. Looks like Tigard moving up on the inside. Tigard and Sheldon at 300m, Tigard fading. 60.2, looks like a slight lead for Sheldon. South Medford moving strong into the lead, Sheldon loses 2nd midway. Now coming back with a difficult pass on the turn and blows by two teams into first. 61.4/2:01.6

15'6" clearance, new meet record, in the boys pole vault. Not sure of the classification and team.

South Medford back into the lead on leg 3, but Sheldon instantly fights back at the end of the 2nd turn. Sheldon pulling away on the homestretch. 60.8/3:02.3. South Medford and Tigard chasing, but Sheldon a 10m+ lead on the backstretch. Sheldon's turnover looks a bit slow with 200m to go ... lead is shrinking. South Medford almost cuaght up with 100m to go but SHeldon has a bit left. Sheldon *barely* holds on. 59.9/4:01.79. South Medford 4:01.83, Tigard 4:03.53.

Corvallis moving up into 3rd. 58.7/1:59.6 Liberty. Summit back into the lead on the backstretch. Slow for the two leaders. 3rd and 4th moving up rapidly. Corvallis and Franklin. Now Summit picks it up on the 2nd turn and pulls away. Corvallis up into 2nd. 61.6/3:01.1 Summit. Corvallis in hot pursuit but has a lot of work to do. Summit a 15-20m lead with 200m to go. Corvallis making a push on the turn... Corvallis moves by with 40m to go, 58.0/3:59.51. Summit 4:00.19, Willamette 4:04.35, Franklin 4:05.86. Corvallis anchor's actual split was probably mid-56 (splits are for whoever is leading eahc lap, not a specific team throughout).

Wilsonville with a decent leg on the backstretch but Redmond closing it up with 200m to go. Very close at the Bell, Wilsonville, Redmond, HRV 61.8/3:05.8 3rd leg. Wilsonville out of the last exchange very fast and opens up a bit of a lead again. Holding even around the 2nd turn. HRV closing on Redmond with 100m to go but not going to get there. Wilsonville 59.3/4:05.28, Redmond 4:07.16, HRV 4:08.36.

D'Arpino out fast on leadoff, rolling in the 2nd turn, has the stagger made up with 100m to go in lane 3. 56.0 leadoff and a big lead at the break. Claire Thomas (Molalla) moving up strong on the second turn, up into 2nd. 63.1/1:59.1 at the 800m, much faster for Thomas's split. North Valley dropped the baton on the 2nd exchange and lost a bunch of ground. No indication of a DQ at this time. Big lead now for Molalla. 60.8/2:59.8. North Valley #3 barely finished, D'Arpino #2 taking off like a bat out of hell in last, trying to move up into the top few spots ... Molalla holding strong with Bever on anchor, 57.7/3:57.90. 4:01.12 Cottage Grove, 4:01.32 Yamhill-Carleton. North Valley moves up into 6th, tied with 5th on the clock.
dkap
4a girls 2nd heat ... D'Arpino time?? North Valley vs. Molalla (800m and 300h champs) should be interesting.
dkap
4a girls 4x400 on the track now, 2-heat finals for the relays ... ~62.2 for the leader. Two teams close at 800m. Newport, Sisters, Philomath. 61.3/2:03.5 at 800m. Same order at 1200m, 62.3/3:05.8. Philomath loses 3rd on the backstretch but not for long ... Sisters, Newport, Philomath. 58.9 last leg, maybe a bit faster for the actual split. 4:04.92, 4:06.10.
