January 17-19 - D1 Track Summary

This was a weekend more about matchups, dual meets and invitationals and less about individual performances and the tough competition provided some top marks.  Defending women’s champion Oregon had their first meet and defending men’s champion Arkansas held off the remade Texas women’s and men’s teams.  

 The men and women remade the lists in the 60m and 200m.  As Prezel Hardy Jr of Texas A&M won the A&M 10-team challenge 60 in 6.56, Aaron Brown ran his first indoor race (6.59) since high school at the Washington Indoor Preview as USC restarted its indoor track program under new head track coach Caryl Smith Gilbert and Ryan Milus of Arizona State won the NAU Lumberjack team challenge in 6.60 as the three seniors took the top three collegiate spots.  BJ Lee was second to his USC teammate in 6.63 (#5).  Freshmen also made an impact as high school all-American Trayvon Bromell of Baylor ran 6.66 for second to Hardy and Tatum Benard-Taylor now at Arizona State ran 6.67 for second against Milus.

#1 Returner Junior Dezerea Bryant (transfer from Clemson) of Kentucky moved to the top of the women’s 60 list and set a school record at the Kentucky Invite by running a pr 7.19.  Oregon teammates Jasmine Todd (7.20) and #2 NCAA returner Jenna Prandini (7.24) went 1-2 at the UW Indoor Preview and moved to 2-3 on the collegiate list.  Morolake Akinosun of Texas won the dual against Arkansas in 7.28 (#3 D1) ahead of freshman Regine Williams of Arkansas (7.33, #6 D1).  Olivia Ekpone of A&M won the Texas A&M 10 team invitational in 7.34 to move to #7 collegiately.   

Prezel Hardy Jr also won the A&M 10-Team Invitational 200 in 20.70 to take the collegiate lead as he beat teammates Aldrich Bailey Jr (20.89, #4 collegiately) and Michael Bryan (20.97 for #6) and Trey Hadnot of Louisianna Tech (21.05, #9 collegian).  Aaron Brown also won the UW Indoor Preview 200 meters in 20.88 on an unbanked track to move to third collegiately.   Timothy Faust of Ohio State won the Nittany Lion Challenge in 21.02 to move to seventh on the D1 list.

Top collegiate returner Kamaria Brown of Texas A&M beat teammate Ashton Purvis in their home team’s invite in 22.96 to 23.57 to take the collegiate lead (Purvis #5).  Bryant won her team’s Kentucky Invitational in 23.04 for her second school record and moved to #2 collegiately.  #3 ranked Regine Williams of Arkansas won the Arkansas vs Texas dual in 23.48.  Mahagony Jones of Penn State won the Nittany Lion Challenge in 23.53 (#4 D1).  Nebraska’s Kadecia Baird won the Holiday Inn Invitational in 23.70 (#6 D1).

Arkansas took the first two spots in the dual versus Texas as Neil Braddy beat Eric Janisse 46.36 (#1 D1) to 46.65 (#5 D1).  Pittsburgh’s Carvin Nkanata won the Nittany Lion Challenge to tie for the D1 lead. Second in the race was Bernard Bennett-Green in 46.61 (#4 D1).  A&M’s Carlyle Roudette beat Baylor’s George Caddick 46.48 (#3 D1)  to 46.73 (#7 D1) at the A&M 10 Team Invitational.  

Freshman Krystyn Williams of Stanford ran 53.39 to take the early seaon collegiate lead at the UW Indoor Preview.  Previous collegiate leader Chrishuna Williams of Arkansas won the dual versus Texas in 53.71.  Freshman Shakima Wimbley of Miami edged Dynasty McGee of Penn State 53.78 (#3 D1) to 54.07 (#4 D1) in the Nittany Lion Challenge.  Christen Rivers of Texas Tech won the TTU Indoor Open in 54.01 (time adjusted to #5 D1).

The Nittany Lion Challenge men’s 800 reset the collegiate list.  Edward Kemboi won in 1:48.14 ahead of Brannon Kidder (1:48.34) and Za’Von Watkins (1:49.47) of Penn State.  Freshman Ryan Manahan of Georgetown was fourth in 1:49.88.  They have taken the top four collegiate spots after going 1-4 in the race.  Brook Handler of Michigan was fourth in the Simmons-Harvey Invitational women’s race (2:08.55) but the race was time adjusted and she has the collegiate lead.    

Joe Rosa finished in second at the UW Indoor Preview invitational mile ahead of Stanford teammate Erik Olson 4:01.72 to 4:02.12 and at this early point in the season they have taken the top two collegiate times.    In the women’s race Oregon’s Laura Roesler (top 800 returner) tracked down pro Lauren Johnson (4:41.16) to win in 4:40.63 (#2 D1) as Kathy Kroeger of Stanford finished third in 4:42.46 (#4 D1).  Arkansas teammates Dominique Scott and Stephanie Brown went 1-2 in the mile, at the dual vs Texas, 4:38.49 to 4:41.26 to move to first and third on the D1 list. Villanova teammates Emily Lipari (4:43.92) and Stephanie Schappert (4:44.60) went 1-2 in the Great Dane Classic to move to #5 and #7 on the NCAA list.

Luc Bruchet of UBC took the NAIA and collegiate lead by winning the 3,000 meters and setting a meet record at the UW Indoor Preview by running 7:54.57 and out-kicking Oregon Track Club Elite’s Ben Blankenship.  Sam Stabler of Lamar won the A&M 12-team Invitational in 8:01.29 to take the NCAA D1 lead.  John Mascari of Indiana State won the Terre Haute double dual in 8:09.39 and his time (adjusted for the facility) moves him to #2 on the D1 list.  At the Simmons-Harvey Invititional freshman sensation Erin Finn of Michigan ran 9:15.82 which moved into the D1 lead (after time adjustment).  

Defending NCAA indoor 3k and indoor and outdoor 5k champion, Abbey D’Agostino (also collegiate 5k leader in 15:40.55) raced in the Dartmouth vs Yale vs Colgate indoor meet and won the 1000 meters (2:46.88) and helped Dartmouth win the 4x800 relay (9:07.42)

Greggmar Swift of Indiana State won the Terre Haute Double Dual in 7.69.  Arkansas freshman Omar McLeod continued his great first season by winning the dual with Texas in 7.69.  Johnathan Cabral of Oregon opened his junior campaign with a win in the UW Indoor Preview in 7.77 (#5 D1) over Aleec Harris of USC (7.84 #9 D1).  Vincent Wyatt of Radford (7.78 #6 D1) edged Jermaine Collier (7.80 #7 D1) at the Virginia Tech Invitational.   

At the Kentucky Invitational Kendra Harrison of Kentucky took the collegiate lead in the prelims (8.09) but was edged by Sharika Nelvis of Arkansas State in the final 8.15 (#2 D1) and Cassandra Lloyd (former three time Horizon League AOY and only Wrights State female a-a) 8.15 as she finished in 8.16.   Jasmin Stowers of LSU won the Auburn Indoor Invitational in 8.16 to move to #3 on the D1 list.  Oregon freshman Sascha Wallace finished second to world championships semifinalist Nia Ali at the UW Indoor Preview 8.18 to 8.21 and moved to #5 on the collegiate list.  Evonne Britton of Penn State won the Nittany Lion Challenge in 8.22 to move to #6 on the D1 list.  

At the Texas A&M 10-team Invitational Texas A&M took the top collegiate time by winning in 3:05.68 over TCU in 3:06.89 (#3 D1) and Baylor in 3:08.99 (#6 D1).  Penn State moved to #5 on the NCAA D1 list by winning the Nittany Lion Invitational in 3:07.83 over Pittsburgh (3:09.80, #9 D1).  LSU won the Auburn Invitational in 3:09.17 and moved to 8th on the collegiate list.  The Texas A&M women dominated the Texas A&M 10-Team Invitational in 3:37.16 to take the early collegiate lead.  The Texas women won the relay in the dual with Arkansas in 3:37.74 to move to #2 on the collegiate list. Miami edged Penn State at the Nittany Lion Challenge, 3:38.66 to 3:38.81 and the teams moved to 5th and 6th on the college list.  Texas Tech won the Texas Tech Invitational in 3:37.80 (converted to #4 on D1 list).   The Nebraska men won the Holiday Inn Invitational Distance Medley Relay in 9:51.70 for the early season collegiate lead.  Arkansas won the DMR in the dual vs Texas by running 11:25.58.

Redshirt senior Nick Ross of Arizona won the 2014 Lumberjack Team Invitational high jump by clearing 7-6 1/2 for a school record and collegiate lead and dedicated the win to former teammate Lezo Urreteria.  Jacorian Duffield of Texas Tech won the Texas Tech Indoor Open with a clearance of 7-3 3/4 (=2nd D1) over teammate Bradley Adkins who cleared 7-2 1/2 (=4 D1).   South Plains CC Shawn Johnson cleared 7-1 1/2 for third.  Anthony May of Arkansas cleared 7-2 1/2 to win the dual vs Texas.  

Jeannelle Scheper of South Carolina cleared a near pr (off by 1 cm) 6-2 3/4 to win the Virginia Tech Invitational and take the early season collegiate lead.  Freshman Leontia Kallenou of Georgia was second to former all-American and world and Olympic competitor Laverne Spencer (6-3 1/4) at the Auburn Invitational with a clearance of 6-2 to move to second on the collegiate list.  Dior Delephont Kent State won the dual versus Akron by clearing 6-0 1/2 and moved to third on the collegiate list.  Amber Melville of Maryland became the fourth collegian over 6-0 and beat teammate Amina Smith (ranked 5th this year) who cleared 5-10 3/4.

Shawn Barber of Akron won the dual versus Kent State and cleared 18-2 1/2 (#2 D1) in the pole vault. Fellow sophomore Jake Blankenship of Tennessee cleared 18-1 1/4 at the Virginia Tech Invitational to move to third on the D1 list.   Braydon Bringhurst of BYU cleared a pr 18-0 1/2 (#4 D1) to win the Lobo Collegiate Opener.   Martina Schultze of Virginia Tech cleared 14-1 /4 at the Virginia Tech Invitational and had the second best clearance by a collegian this year.  Morgann Leleux from Georgia won the Auburn Indoor Invitational with a clearance of 13-11 1/4 (4th best clearance).  Texas’ Kaitlyn Petrillose cleared 13-11 1/4 to win the dual versus Arkansas (lower than her collegiate best 14-9 at the Expo Explosion).  Diamara Planell Cruz of Washington returned from her redshirt year and cleared a near 10” pr of 13-11 1/4 to win the UW Indoor Preview.  Kiley Tobel of Michigan also cleared a pr 13-11 1/4 to win the Simmons-Hardin Invitational

Arkansas’ Jarrion Lawson jumped a best of 25-6 3/4 at the dual versus Texas to move into a tie for first on the D1 long jump listings.  Jeremiah Green of Alabama won the Auburn Indoor Invitational with a best triple jump of 52-6 1/2 (#1 D1) over Mississippi’s Phillip Young at 52-2 1/2 (#4 D1). At the Texas A&M 10-team Invitational Laque Moen-Davis won the women’s triple jump with a best of 44-3 1/4 to take the collegiate lead  .  Christina Epps of Coppin State won the Albany Great Dane Invitational with a best jump of 42-5 1/4 (#2 D1).  Tristine Johnson from North Carolina won the Gene Invitational with a best jump of 42-2 3/4 to move to third on the collegiate list.  

Jonathan jones of Buffalo won the Albany Great Dane Classic Shot Put with a best throw of 64-8 1/2 (#4 D1). Stephen Mozia of Cornell won the Nittany Lion Challenge at 64-7 1/4 (#5 D1).  Kole Weldon of Texas Tech threw 64-5 (#6 D1) to take his home team Invite.  Chukwuebuka Enekwechi of Purdue took the Purdue and Indiana Dual shot put (62-9 1/2, #7 D1) and improved his collegiate lead in the weight throw (76-5 3/4).  DII   leader Christopher Reed won the Northwest Open shot put with a best throw of 62-10 to  go along with a weight throw victory and he garnered the national DII athlete of the week.  Top women’s shot put returner Christina Hillman won the Iowa Big 4 Duals at 55-1 (#1 D1 this year at 57-5 1/2).  World Championships competitor Alyssa Hasslen of Arizona (#2 returner) threw 55-1 (#3 D1) to win the Lumberjack Team Invitational.  Joh’vonnie Mosley of Kent State won the dual against Akron with a throw of 54’8 (#5 D1).  Kearston Peoples of Missouri won the dual against Wisconsin with a best throw of 54-7 1/4 (#6 D1).  All-American Anna Jelmini won the Lumberjack Team Challenge with a best throw of 54-2 (#9 D1).

DII thrower Justin Welch of Findlay won the NW Ohio Invitational (69-5 1/4) weight throw to move to 1st on the D2. All-American Nick Miller of Oklahoma State won the K-State invitational with a pr throw of 71-11 3/4 (#3 D1). Jon Lehman of Minnesota also threw a pr 71-11 (#4 D1) to win the Northwest Open.  Freshman Jordan Young of Arizona threw a school record 69-2 3/4 (#5 D1) to win the Lumberjack Team Challenge.  Purdue’s Dani Bunch threw 73-4 to win the dual with Indiana and take the collegiate lead.  Brittany Funk of Akron won the weight throw in the dual against Kent State with a throw of 71-5 1/4 (#2 D1).  At the Virginia Tech Invitational Kayla Padgett of East Carolina threw 70-8 1/2 (#3 D1) to win.  Kearsten Peoples got the double with the win in the weight throw at 69’6.

Defending NCAA champion and world championship competitor Erica Bougard of Mississippi State won the Samford Multis with a mark of 4207 (#1 D1)  points and beat Fabia McDonald of Mississippi with 3989 points (#2 D1).
