Though I may be particularly
biased, the Heptagonal Championships may be said to be the best conference
competition in the nation. Under the guidance and regulations of Ivy
League governance the Championships has the ability to highlight true
amateur athleticism. Unlike much of the nation’s conferences, neither
athletic scholarships nor “back door” enrollment activities hinder
the purity of the annual meeting. Additionally, participating athletes
faithfully and ardently represent their university rather than themselves.
That said, it is not uncommon for athletes to give up personal victory
for the opportunity to attain more team points.
Whilst provided with the backdrop
of historic rivalries and equally storied venues, spectators are further
complemented with athletes providing exceptional competition. Though
the entire talent pool may not be that of a Big 10 or ACC, the Ancient
Eight continually fields noteworthy and nationally ranked athletes.
And due to the fact that Heptagonal competition only scores to sixth
place, events’ finals never fail to be exciting, tactical and oftentimes
scrappy.
Having taken part in both Heps
and other recognizable national events, I can truthfully state that
the Heptagonal Championships is simply extraordinary.
